Formerly known as the Southwest Michigan Innovation Center (SMIC), the Innovation Center opened its doors in 2003 in the heart of Western Michigan University’s Business Technology & Research Park, a state-designated, tax-advantaged SmartZone. The region of Southwest Michigan enjoys a rich history of life science innovation, an array of scientific, technologic and business know-how, and an amazing quality of life.
WMed is a private medical school formed through a collaboration of Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo’s two teaching hospitals, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare. An integral component of the medical school’s research strategy, the Innovation Center supplements the two research floors on WMed’s downtown W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus by providing incubator space that serves to advance research discoveries to commercialization as well as more research experience opportunities for medical school learners. Innovation Center researchers are encouraged to seek a faculty appointment at the medical school in order to share their expertise with learners, collaborate with other faculty, and to benefit from medical school resources.
